The structural gap
Span and depth are structurally coupled: increasing span requires increasing depth (or material strength), but increasing depth consumes the space the span was meant to create. Maximum open volume and minimum structural material are irreconcilable goals. Every structural system — post-and-lintel, arch, frame, shell — is a different strategy for distributing this unfixable tension. Compression efficiency and tensile efficiency cannot be optimized simultaneously in a single homogeneous material. The comma: the structure that enables space also occupies it.
Every work’s position is derived from its field territory through this mapping — never classified independently. Each edge carries its justification and an evidential grade.
Load resolution as invisible infrastructure: the load path is real and fully operative, but the experience is of space, proportion, and surface. The comma is managed by concealment — the domain's default condition and the burden-of-evidence baseline (most vernacular and classical building).
Structure visibly organized but meaning traveling independently of load logic: the flying buttress makes the load path legible while the experience is vertical transcendence; the expressed steel frame serves universal space. The structural tension is distributed between legibility and content without becoming the announced subject.
Force flow generates form directly: structural necessity and architectural ambition made to coincide (Nervi, Candela, Maillart at Salginatobel, Dieste). The comma is exploited — constraint generates content, the Oulipo condition in built form.
The building will not do anything gravity does not demand: austerity as a consequence of total commitment to the load path, the gap between structural resolution and architectural intention closed by fidelity.
