Kernel of Literature
Recursive phrase structure — the embedding of clauses within clauses according to grammatical rules, generating unbounded meaning from finite combinatorial operations
The structural gap
Recursive depth and cognitive tractability are structurally coupled and cannot both be maximized. Natural language grammar permits unbounded recursion — sentences can be embedded within sentences indefinitely, as Chomsky demonstrated. But human working memory constrains tractability: beyond two or three levels of embedding, comprehension fails not because the syntax is wrong but because the processing load exceeds cognitive capacity. The comma is the gap between what syntax permits and what cognition can process. No literary tradition has closed it. Every tradition is a management strategy for that gap — compression (Hemingway's parataxis refuses deep embedding), expansion (James's hypotaxis approaches the tractability limit deliberately), fragmentation (Beckett dismantles embedding itself as the structural argument). The comma is measurable: mean syntactic dependency distance, subordinate clause depth, and embedding level are all proxies for where a work sits relative to the tractability boundary.
Every work’s position is derived from its field territory through this mapping — never classified independently. Each edge carries its justification and an evidential grade.
Coordinate clause structure and shallow embedding: syntax as transparent infrastructure, tractability maximized, recursive depth minimal (Hemingway, Camus). The kernel is present but invisible — the writer navigates syntax by declining to exploit it. Infrastructure by transparency.
Mixed coordination and subordination: syntactic tension distributed through balance rather than concentrated (Austen, Fitzgerald, Conrad). Syntax is visible enough to be a stylistic signature but is not foregrounded as the structural argument — the hybrid Distribution zone.
Deep subordination exploited as structural mechanism: clause embedding generates meaning through syntactic hierarchy, and the reader's tracking of multiple levels is the productive load (Dickens, Melville, early-middle James). The recursive depth is the content — Exploitation.
Syntactic depth pushed to the tractability boundary: sentences defer closure through recursive embedding until cognitive load becomes the reading experience, grammar intact (Proust, late James, The Waves). The kernel's logic extended to its natural limit — formerly 'commitment'; maps to (Exploitation, commitment_yes = TRUE) per migration 0171.
vs Refusal (agrammatical): in Periodic the grammar holds — the reader's processing capacity is the limit; in Agrammatical the grammar itself is dismantled as the argument.
Syntax itself dismantled as structural argument: grammar violated, sentence boundaries dissolved, embedding rules broken as a systematic position, not incompetence (late Beckett, Finnegans Wake, certain Stein). The comma is made visible by breaking the system that produces it — Refusal.
