The structural gap
The harmonic series generates a family of incommensurabilities — ratios that cannot all close simultaneously within any fixed temperament. The primary structural gap for Western tonal practice is the Pythagorean comma: twelve pure fifths (3/2)^12 = 531441/4096 ≈ 129.746 versus seven octaves 2^7 = 128, a discrepancy of ~23.46 cents. A system built purely on fifths cannot close into a circle of octaves. Every tuning system (Pythagorean, meantone, well-temperament, equal temperament) is a different strategy for distributing this unfixable error. But the Pythagorean comma is not the only gap. The 7th partial of the harmonic series (~969 cents) sits approximately 31 cents flat of the equal-tempered minor seventh (1000 cents) — irresolvable within 12-TET. This is the acoustic basis of blue notes in African-derived music: the natural seventh exists in a pitch space that equal temperament cannot represent. Blues practice navigates this second comma simultaneously with the first — the performer is home relative to the fifth while pressing against a gap the fifth's resolution did not close. The comma is not a single number — it is a family of structural impossibilities generated by the harmonic series. Every temperament resolves some and leaves others open. The topology of the field is shaped by which commas were resolved and which remain live.
Every work’s position is derived from its field territory through this mapping — never classified independently. Each edge carries its justification and an evidential grade.
Fifths-generated scale families are the kernel's home ground: harmonic vocabulary, key relations, and cadence are all governed by the fifth operating within its reducible range. A work in diatonic territory never encounters the comma directly — the kernel operates as invisible substrate, which is the Infrastructure condition.
vs Distribution: pure fifths-generated vocabulary with no comma management on the surface. Traversal of all 24 keys remains diatonic (WTC): the traversal crosses keys, not scale-family territories.
A hybrid zone bridging diatonic and the symmetric worlds: the acoustic collection mixes fifths-generated organization with symmetric-scale color. The comma tension is present but spread across the hybrid vocabulary rather than concentrated or made the subject — the Distribution condition.
Diatonic frames with raised or lowered degrees borrowing from symmetric territory. The tension between fifths-generated and symmetric organization is distributed through the altered degrees; the work manages the seam rather than exploiting it.
Augmented-triad territory: major-third cycles place tonal centers at maximum Circle-of-Fifths distance, exploiting a specific symmetry of the chromatic field the fifth generates. The symmetric property is the content — the comma concentrated and made generative, the Exploitation condition (Giant Steps is the anchor case).
vs Refusal: hexatonic works still operate inside the fifths-generated twelve-tone universe and exploit its geometry; chromatic territory replaces the organizing logic entirely.
Diminished-seventh territory, quasi-symmetric: like hexatonic, it seizes a symmetric subset of the fifths-generated chromatic universe and works that subset's specific interval properties as generative material.
Maximum symmetry: the whole-tone collection erases the asymmetries fifths-generation produces (leading tone, dominant polarity) by exploiting the evenness available inside the twelve-tone universe. The erasure is achieved with the field's own resources — exploitation, not negation.
Outside all fifth-generated territories: fifths-based organization replaced by interval-class relationships, set-class logic, spectral organization, or parametric independence as the primary structural language. The kernel's organizing logic is systematically negated and the negation is the structural argument — the Refusal condition.
vs Exploitation: the symmetric territories work within the fifths-generated field's geometry; chromatic replaces its organizing logic entirely (Interstellar Space, Pierrot lunaire).
